THE White House was on the defensive yesterday after one of the world's most famous investigative journalists claimed George W Bush was privately committed to war in Iraq while still pursuing a diplomatic solution in public.

Bob Woodward, the Washington Post journalist who helped expose the Watergate scandal, said the US president made the decision to go to war in January 2003. He and Tony Blair still were arguing for a UN mandate at that time.
