ONLY SIX months ago, Andrew Gimson, Boris Johnson's Boswell (some say his Boriswell), told me he was horrified by the latest episode in the life story of the much-loved Tory spokesman for Higher Education. "It's appalling that The News of the World should place a photographer outside a young lady's flat to intrude on her private life," said Gimson, whose Borisography is being serialised in The Sunday Times.

Gimson told me he was hoping to concentrate on Johnson's political career and he could have done without the colourful details of the MP for Henley's latest tumble in Paris with Anna Fazackerley, a journalist on the Times Higher Education Supplement.
