Carey Admired Charles's Compassion

Summary

In your report of the letter that the Prince of Wales wrote to Jonathan Dimbleby following a television documentary, you suggest that Lord Carey, the former Archbishop of Canterbury, did not have a great respect for the Prince (News, September 4). In his autobiography Lord Carey expresses the greatest admiration for the Prince saying that he "was and is a man of great stature and vision - deeply committed to the welfare of all, and a more caring and compassionate man would be hard to find''. He added: "He will wear the crown with distinction, and will continue to give noble and valuable service. I would welcome too his marriage to Mrs Parker Bowles.''

Regarding Prince Charles's remark that he wanted to be seen as "defender of faiths'', Lord Carey wrote: "I did not share the view that this was somehow a defining statement by the prince. I saw it more as an off-the-cuff remark about his desire to foster spirituality. I, too, have always been uncomfortable with the phrase 'defender of the faith' if it means no more than the role of the monarchy in protecting the vested interests of the Church of England. The most I would say in criticism of Prince Charles's statement is that it could have been expressed better. But that is forgivable in the light of his great concern for spirituality as opposed to the coldness of materialism and secularism.''
