CAUDWELL GROUP, the telecoms empire created by the Midlands billionaire John Caudwell which includes the mobile phone retailer Phones4U, saw its profits jump last year as it consolidated its position on the high street.

Documents due to be filed at Companies House this week reveal that turnover at Caudwell Holdings Ltd was pounds 2.28bn last year, up from pounds 2.04bn in 2002 - a 12 per cent increase. Underlying pre-tax profits rose from pounds 30.4m to pounds 44.9m, an increase of almost 50 per cent, after the pounds 350m exceptional gain from the sale of Singlepoint, the virtual mobile operator, to Vodafone had been stripped out.
