ENGINEERING group Charter yesterday reported a jump in profits for 2005, in part on the back of an improved performance by its Howden air and gas handling subsidiary based in Renfrew.

Pre-tax profits surged 152per cent to GBP103.5m as Charter reaped the benefits of its extended programme of streamlining operations, cutting costs and reducing debt.
