THE City turned up its fire on Gordon Brown today as further doubts emerged over his Budget forecasts.

Analysts queued up to pour cold water on the Chancellor's optimistic growth forecasts, and said his fiscal arithmetic did not add up. They said that by putting off headline-grabbing tax rises until another day, he was simply delaying the inevitable. There were also accusations he has taken his eye off the economic ball in his obsessive desire to be Prime Minister.
