PADDY GANNON knows the boglands of Derryherbert like the back of his hand. But then again, so he should. His family, including three brothers and five sisters, have helped cut and bring home the turf from their stretch of ancient soil in Co. Galway for more than 70 years.

It's a unique, unspoilt, prehistoric landscape, one of the most popular tourist destinations in the whole of Europe. But to Paddy, now in his early 70s, and his 13 children and 20 grandchildren, it is largely one thing, and one thing only: home.

'I know I would say this, being born and bred here,' he explains simply, 'but there's nowhere else like it in the entire country, if not the whole world.' And there lies the rub.
