BRITAIN'S hopes of a global 'new deal' to haul the world economy out of recession suffered a major setback last night when Finance Ministers from the Group of 20 leading nations meeting in the UK failed to agree on substantial measures to restore growth.

Delegates at the G20 talks tried to paper over the cracks in a communique that was short on any solid commitment of the type sought by Prime Minister Gordon Brown and Chancellor Alistair Darling.
