Summary
THE right to vote is the cornerstone of a democratic society. It is enshrined in the Declaration of Human Rights (1948) Article 21 (1). Everyone has the right to take part in the government of their country directly or through freely chosen representatives. Voting represents one of the ways we participate in the civic life and public affairs of the city. People have until August 20, 2004 to check that they are on the electoral roll. You can also phone 0800 36 76 56 for a free information pack. This pack is available in a number of languages and it also available from Post Shops, the City Library and the Palmerston North City Council's Customer Services Centre in The Square.
I was born and bred in a country where I was denied the right to vote. To me the right to vote in elections is one of the few times when everyone on the electoral roll is equal. Everyone's vote is equal. The every vote has the same value and power. So just say "yes" to enrolling and voting and exercise your power through the ballot box in the forthcoming local elections.See the full content of this document
