Summary


THE Department of Health isn't proposing a 'tax on old age' (Mail). A compulsory contribution is only one option of many. Faced with a rapidly ageing population, it's right that we consult the public on the creation of a new care and support system which is fair and sustainable.

The ageing population presents great challenges. We expect over two million more people to have care and support needs in 20 years' time. A radical programme of social care transformation began this April in every local authority area. We will also be announcing a new deal for carers and publishing the first national dementia strategy.
