Summary

OCTOBER elections for city and regional councillors are approaching and many a voter will succumb to phobias (like Optophobia, fear of opening one's eyes) and under pressure consider and decide the exercise is just too futile (Kenophobia, fear of voids). If every eligible recalcitrant pupil voted, couldn't elected councillors be different from the tired old shrews we repetitiously end up with?

When we do vote we usually arrive at the decision on "face value" -- voting for an elderly if ardent individual who claims to know and understand our views and represent our desires. Maybe candidates look, smell and sound better over the years. Pity we don't exercise the other senses we possess such as touch, taste and equilibrium? Let's not forget "the machine". On top or under every councillor -- forgive the allusion -- lie hidden electoral teams, incumbent administrations, city and regional workforces (approximately 550 souls for PNCC and 196 for Horizons). When deciding your vote consider that over 700 people dependent on your rates and other taxes have once again taken your continued goodwill for granted.
