IT'S not the first time the following words of gratitude will be uttered - and it almost certainly won't be the last. Thank God for James McFadden. At least we could savour his brief cameo performance; could kid ourselves that the preceding 50-odd minutes and two goals conceded had been just a warm-up.

That not even the spectacular introduction of Berti Vogts' favourite 'cheeky boy' could save us from defeat by the nation which brought us the Cheeky Girls - a good enough reason to hate them - was no great shock.
