LIKE many people, I try to stay healthy by replacing 'bad' things with 'good' - no junk food, buying organic produce, eating five portions a day of fruit and veg. But despite the diet of a saint, I had been feeling awful - fatigue, jitteriness, visual problems. I'd spent months doing the round of blood, liver and gastrointestinal specialists, and none had found a clear cause for how I felt.

My doctor friend explained why there could be a connection. The amalgam used for fillings is made up with around 50 per cent mercury, one of the most toxic substances.
