Cup-winning coach is now unemployed, a consequence of crass mismanagement by the South African Rugby Union and his own determination to escape the political minefield that accompanies sport in that country. I last met him properly in a Johannesburg hotel in June during England's summer tour. He talked that morning of his hopes for his Springboks and he reiterated his belief that they were capable of winning the World Cup.
