Summary


I'M SADDENED by the death of Steven Bell, the 'Gingerbread Man'. I'm a food writer and Steven contacted me last year to ask for my support after reading some of my articles on Grasmere gingerbread. I (and several other food writers) readily agreed to offer support.

Grasmere gingerbread, a speciality of the Lake District, is particularly famous for its unique pale, crumbly appearance and crisp, chewy texture. It's an old recipe made with oats or oatmeal, unrefined sugar and spices. Oats were grown locally and treacle and unrefined sugar from the West Indies were easily obtainable from ports on the Cumberland coast and Liverpool.
