Summary

WHY CARGESE? Corsica is largely unspoilt, with a marvellous mix of sea, mountains, cliffs and bays, and Cargese, on the west coast, offers all that is best about this beautiful island. The town was founded in the 17th century by Greek refugees fleeing Turkish rule. The Greeks and Catholics later reached an agreement, and now the Catholic (above) and Orthodox churches face each other across a narrow valley, both administered by the same priest. The town is on a hillside (top right) above its own harbour. It has a wide sandy beach and access to some of Corisca's best scenery. There are little rocky bays for snorkelling and swimming, and you can do watersports locally. Small bars and restaurants abound, and the food is simple but good.

WHAT DO YOU MISS MOST WHEN YOU ARE AWAY? The peace, the sunshine, the smell of the maquis [native flowering shrubs] and the sheer beauty.
