Summary


Owing to the unseasonably warm weather, I have given less thought than usual to my winter wardrobe. This week, however, I intend to go out and buy an extra-thick pair of breeches, possibly made of burlap, and a hat with ear-flaps to contain my fierce inner life. It is, I think, a safe bet to say that neither of these items will have been hand-stitched in Paris.

Until I watched The Secret World of Haute Couture (Monday, BBC4), I had no idea this was the key qualification for haute couture - nothing else, however lovingly tooled in, say, Cleethorpes, can ever make the grade. Margy Kinmonth's film tried to get inside the coterie of women who happily pay $100,000 for a dress. There are only about 200 of them in the world and, as soon became apparent, they all have matchstick legs, millpond-like complexions and extremely weird names.
