SCIENTISTS have pinpointed a clutch of common genes that can lead to high blood pressure, paving the way for new treatments for the potentially deadly condition.

Some of the rogue genes are carried by up to half the population, and together they could raise the risk of a heart attack by more than a fifth and a stroke by more than a third.
