I realized the potential of gardens for children when we had a fourth birthday party in the garden on a hot July day. The entertainer, a clown, was totally ignored as 30 children played in our garden pool, catching mini frogs, wading, floating boats, splashing and remaining oblivious to the clown's pranks and pratfalls.

Outside play has a much wider scope than indoors and it is worth developing your garden to the maximum, but that does not necessarily mean sacrificing adult gardening objectives too. Ask your children what they enjoy doing outside, go to see some great child-friendly gardens, and then get your plans started.
