YESTERDAY was a very bad news day for the Irish people. It was a particularly bad news day for the 320 workers who lost their jobs at Tyco Safety Products in Cork and now face the bleak prospect of Christmas on the dole.

But there was also very bad news for every single citizen of this State in the Quarterly National Account figures released by the Central Statistics Office. These figures show that for the second quarter in a row, our gross national product and our gross domestic product fell.
