THERE was much confusion at The Banker magazine's awards ceremony last week when it came to the obscure country award for Uruguay.

The prize went to ABN Amro, which RBS, Fortis Bank and Santander divvied up after beating Barclays to the Dutch bank's hand. But our spies tell us RBS chief Sir Fred Goodwin and Fortis Bank chief Jean- Paul Votron both looked around quizzically to see which of them would collect the award.
