AN American hostage in Iraq was last night beheaded by a man believed to be Abu Musab al Zarqawi, the main al Qaeda ally in Iraq.

Eugene Armstrong, a construction contractor, was kidnapped along with Kenneth Bigley, a 62-year-old engineer from Liverpool, and another American, Jack Hensley, in Baghdad last Thursday. Their captors had threatened to kill the three unless US authorities freed women prisoners in Iraqi jails.
