SIR - The chief glory of central Cardiff today is the result of negative rather than positive action by the Bute estate by refusing to lease Cathays Park, Cooper's Field and much of the farms of Maendy, Mynachdy, Pontcanna, Plasturton and Blackweir for building purposes.

The marquess preserved a vast tract of open land in the heart of Cardiff long enough to ensure that its value would be recognised and that it would be preserved in perpetuity (see Studies in Welsh History: Cardiff and the Marquesses of Bute, John Davies, 1981, University of Wales Press).
