Summary

IN THE immediate aftermath of Zinedine Zidane's butt on Marco Materazzi, I remember that no one really knew what had happened because it had happened off the ball. In the BBC studio, we were all aware that something serious had taken place but we had to wait while the host broadcaster searched through their different cameras to try to find the one with the relevant footage.

Despite our anticipation, nothing could prepare us for the images that would follow: just pure shock, completely gobsmacked. It was such a violent act. Then our professionalism started to kick in as we realised that this was not just a defining moment in the World Cup final but also a momentous incident in World Cup history. It was unprecedented to see a sending-off like that at such a massive event - we had an audience not far short of 20 million at the time. When a story that big breaks you just feel the pressure of making sure that you get it right: it was exhilarating stuff.
