CHRISTMAS is your big chance to glam it up, so get ready to set the table of the year. Now that the stores are pulsating with sparkle, work out your guest list, choose your theme, stick with it, and shop. Use cutting-edge design to sharpen up your act, says Lucy Engwell, marketing and visual manager for Habitat. She has chosen the latest work by fresh designers to inspire her Christmas table. Starting point is the fantasy graphics of animals and flowers by new young RCA graduate Concetta Gallo, whose dreamy patterns drift over chinaware, cushions and even a rug. To this, Engwell has added quirky, printed table linens by wallpaper artist Deborah Bowness.

"Don't be scared to add pattern to pattern," says Engwell. "You can mix metals, too say silver with copper." The secret of her dramatic technique is "layering" with rich tone-on-tones of purple, amethyst and ruby, using this season's glassware from Habitat (call 0844 499 1111; www.habitat.net).
