Dear Jonathan, Last week, you suggested that dogs cannot recognise themselves in a mirror. But my lurcher used to sit in front of a mirror and actively preen herself. She would look over her shoulder to admire her reflection and knew exactly what she was doing. She was highly intelligent and very responsive. She would 'speak' to me if she wanted anything; and if I blinked my eyes at her, she would respond in the same way, deliberately. She was overjoyed when she realised that it was possible to communicate without language, as was I. Don't ever underestimate animals. Vivienne
