WHY BEIJING? It's a gritty, grey city but it's the future and it's thrilling. Editing a guidebook to the city, I focused on the positives - you can't ignore the fact that Beijing is destined to be the capital of the 21st century in the same way New York was in the 20th and London during the 19th.

WHAT DO YOU MISS MOST WHEN YOU ARE AWAY? The mood along Ghost Street and down the old hutongs (alleys), especially after dark, when a thousand red lanterns wave in the breeze, evoking an ancient, people-friendly city (top-left).
