CHARLES Kennedy might have to hand over [GBP]2.4m to Gordon Brown if a donation of the same amount from a Scottish businessman to the Liberal Democrats is deemed to have broken election rules, it emerged last night.

Paying back the money - the LibDems' largest gift which enabled them to quadruple spending on the May 5 campaign to around [GBP]6m - would not only plunge the party into a financial crisis but, to add insult to injury, would go straight into the government's pocket.
