Summary


Today I am calling on all citizens to join my campaign to Save the Wasp. Urgent action is needed to stop Britain's population of these noble creatures being wiped out. It is estimated that, if we do nothing, by the year 2009, there will be just one wasp left. Scientists calculate that it will be cowering inside the trouser leg of a man in Cirencester, seated at an outside table at a wine bar and giving his views on global warming.

A report last week said that, while there are far fewer wasps this summer, there is a big increase in the number of hornets. At first I suspected the authors had been victims of a sustained propaganda campaign by my wife. A hundred times every summer she says: "That is much too big to be a wasp; that's a queen hornet at least.''
