Summary
THE RETURN of Harry Bosch was the highlight of the year. Michael Connelly's detective comes out of retirement in The Closers (Orion, Pounds 17.99). He and his former sidekick, Kiz Rider, investigate one of the 8,000 open-unsolved cases that have remained on the Los Angeles Police Department's books since 1960 - the murder of a schoolgirl in 1988.
Connelly's knack for characterisation and scene-setting never get in the way of his exciting plots. Nor does he ever let the reader forget "the toll of violence over time". All these qualities were on show in his second novel of the year, The Lincoln Lawyer (Orion, Pounds 17.99), which introduces a new character, Mickey Haller, a defence lawyer whose decision to defend a wealthy estate agent arrested for the brutal beating of a prostitute turns out to be a bad one.See the full content of this document
