Summary
POPE John Paul II died as he lived, offering the world an object lesson in Christian fortitude. When Roman Catholics speak of "a good death", this is what they mean. The Pope, who entered this world 84 years ago as plain Karol Wojtyla, characteristically spent his last hours on earth tholing his suffering and tying up unfinished business. Though he never courted suffering, he believed that it was something to be not only endured but embraced, and his life was a testament to this belief. He seemed to grow stronger through hardships that would have broken lessermen.
Long before his enthronement, he survived being put to work in the mines by the Nazis and resisted the communists. The sturdiness of his physique was again demonstrated when he survived an assassination attempt in Rome in 1981. Even when his physical vigourwas curtailed by age and Parkinson's disease, he continued to work tirelessly for his worldwide flock. In total, he visited 120 countries, including Scotland in 1982. He became parish priest to the world.See the full content of this document
