Summary


IT WAS early morning. I was aboard a Kenya Airways jet, waiting to take off on the airline's inaugural flight from Nairobi to Antananarivo, capital of Madagascar, fourth largest island in the world, frequently described as 'The Land that Time Forgot'. Time forgotten. I glanced at my watch. I had been travelling all night, having landed before dawn from Europe. This flight was running a tad late, nothing serious but I was tired, eager to reach my destination.

Up in business class stood an imposingly handsome African in sharply cut suit and Italian loafers, the director of the airline. Surrounding him was an assortment of assistants, various African journalists and TV cameramen and one exceedingly scruffy English chap working for an international Press agency. Champagne was being served and the cabin exuded a party mood. No one seemed troubled by the delay.

'This is Africa,' I reminded myself.

Engines roared; we were on our way. The director spoke via Tannoy to the passengers. 'This is a special day,' he hailed. The Brit called for more champagne and whispered to the rather beautiful African hostess that he wanted 'an exclusive' with the airline's boss. She nodded, passed the info on to the director and then asked me if I also wanted an exclusive interview. I shook my head, thanking her kindly. The British hack snarled at me and went to sleep.
