Back in Britain, he has been heralded a hero by fellow athletes, royalty and armchair fans alike.

But there is one person who has not yet been able to congratulate him in person - his wife, Michelle.

Rather than cheer him on from the shores of Shunyi Lake in Beijing, she watched the race sitting in her office canteen in the East Midlands. She was not at Heathrow Airport to greet him and, bizarrely, she has still not seen him since his momentous win. The reason?
