Summary


It is a measure of Simon Jones's progress, and of the renewed interest in the national team, that his dodgy ankle filled so many column inches last week. Although it is disappointing for him, it is surely right that he undergoes surgery to the bone spur on his right ankle before the tour of Pakistan rather than just limping through it and delaying the inevitable.

The decisive measure now taken is a reflection on the improvement of England's medical staff and the provision for, and care given to, players. I well remember trawling through various pilates studios in west London having to find and fund treatment for myself before the World Cup of 1999. And if you think that is just the bitter reminiscences of a not-so-recently retired player then consider this: it is only three winters ago that England arrived in Australia unable to put 11 fit men on to the park.
