NATO cannot afford to walk away from Afghanistan however dangerous or expensive the campaign becomes, the alliance's secretary general warned last night.

Jaap De Hoop Scheffer, who stands down next week after five years at the helm of Nato, said that failure in Afghanistan would give a "free run" for al-Qaeda's global terrorist ambitions.
