ON A NIGHT when the cream of European football was in Monaco for the Champions League draw, Manchester City took a squad packed with more than Pounds 200million worth of talent to Crystal Palace in the Carling Cup.

Joleon Lescott made his City debut after his Pounds 22m move from Everton and Mark Hughes's side beat Championship opponents 2-0. Manager Hughes was vindicated in picking his strongest line-up for a second round tie as Shaun Wright-Phillips and Carlos Tevez scored after the break.
