NTL has lined up Michael Jackson, the former chief executive of Channel 4, to run ITV if its audacious bid for the broadcaster succeeds.

The cable TV operator is also thought to have arranged the pounds 5bn finance necessary for a cash bid through its investment banking advisers, Goldman Sachs and JP Morgan, despite already being heavily indebted. One long-term option would be for the combined company to refinance its whole balance sheet in a move that could involve up to pounds 12bn of new loans.
