MORE than 4000 pipers will descend upon Battery Park, Greenock, on Saturday to compete in the European Pipe Band Championships.

The second largest in the Royal Scottish Pipe Band Association's calendar of major events, the championships will see some 136 bands competing. In addition to the pipers, drummers and pipe majors, there will be a Highland Dance Competition and so far about 50 dancers have registered, with entries being taken up to and on the day.
