Adair Turner, the brainiac former director general of the CBI, was fizzing over with excitement the other day about the population calculator on the United Nations website (esa.un.org/unpp). At the click of a mouse, it'll tell you everything you could possibly want to know about global demographics, from the fertility rate in Vanuatu to forecasts of how many women there are likely to be in Italy, aged 18 to 23, in 2050.

It's hours of fun, if you're that way inclined. But it's been of particular use to Turner, because he has been charged by the Government with assessing whether we in the UK are making sufficient financial provision for our old age. And he can't take a stab at that without knowing roughly how many of us will be working and paying taxes in decades to come, to support a retired population.
