TO THE City Road basin in Islington, where locals are issuing a last-minute appeal to Ken Livingstone to save them from the monstrous Centre Point-style tower blocks due to be built there.

How does British Waterways defend this grotesque scheme? "The basin has been tucked away and inaccessible since it was built and has been the subject of piecemeal development." But this is precisely its charm: it's a secret oasis, evolved in higgledy- piggledy fashion, tucked away from bustle and clamour.
