Summary


DOUG Maughan (Letters, January 31) overlooks the fact that the SNP has always put the case for Scottish independence but in the context of arguing for particular political objectives which SNP parliamentarians would seek to implement short of independence. This is in stark contrast to the approach of New Labour which, having abandoned any pretence at the implementation of a democratic socialist, or even social democratic, programme, is currently foisting neoconservative policies on the UK which would embarrass many a Christian Democrat government in Europe.

Just read the report in The Herald of the address which the English health secretary, Dr John Reid, recently gave to Paisley University. It was nothing less than a hymn to the philosophy of consumerism and the concept of putting the market before people in a way which even Margaret Thatcher would have had second thoughts about. These neo-conservative values are evident in Labour- controlled councils such as Renfrewshire relentlessly pursuing pro- privatisation policies with housing stock transfer, the use of PFI/ PPP in the educational sector, and the Labour executive in Edinburgh pushing through current legislation which could lead to the privatisation of fire services.
