THE Herald on Saturday beautifully encapsulates the times we live in. It reports that a notoriously cost-cutting and profit- maximising banker in one of Britain's most loathed business sectors is knighted, while Scotland's most eminent composer is forced to denounce one of the most savage downsizings of a publicly funded national cultural institution ever seen.

Opera is not my favourite musical genre, but I and others can scarcely fail to recognise that our highly esteemed national company is a delicate flower which surely required more gentle pruning than it has received, to the point where it could now die.
