Further to your report on the two police community support officers failing to go to the aid of a drowning boy (News & Comment, September 23), when I did a police life-saving course, one of the first things I was taught was that a rescue should never be attempted when there is no chance of a successful completion, because then there will be two casualties instead of one.The second lesson was: "Going into the water is your last option, not your first."
