IN THE Fifties, sports day at school was a big event -- we practised for weeks before, trying to master all the serious track events, the 'slow bicycle race' and three-legged race.
The baton change was practised again and again -- knowing how to hold the hand out, which leg or arm to have in sync with the handover -- and I never remember anyone dropping the baton. But, of course, we were 12 years old.See the full content of this document
