Summary


WE HAVE so many politicians nowadays that it is difficult to know who they are. MEPs have almost total anonymity. Local authorities shift and split like amoebas, producing ever more obscure councillors. Devolved parliaments have elevated dozens of nobodies to well-paid posts. The more Westminster loses its powers, the more MPs we seem to have.

As if this were not enough, shoals of equally minor figures regularly slip unnoticed into the House of Lords. Nobody has heard of them. Nobody knows what they are really like, until sleaze allegations - like a sudden lightning flash - reveal them, scurrying furtively towards the exit.
