HEARTIEST congratulations to Paul Russell, the Glamorgan chairman. There I've said it. It wasn't easy, it wasn't expected, and we'll come to the caveat later. But Russell has delivered a magnificent Test venue. Without his acumen, drive and determination Test cricket would never have come to Wales. For that he will always be remembered, and rightly so.
He has produced a modern miracle. Considering the state of this Sophia Gardens ground in 2005, you might just have got attractively long odds on this match taking place at Cardiff. This was once a dump where spectators sheltered under little more than a cowshed beside the River Taff and the changing facilities were so spartan that my old mate Hugh Morris used to observe, "This must be the only county ground where you can score a hundred and walk straight into the toilet".
