MIDWIVES at Caithness General Hospital in Wick have delivered a second baby despite an official suspension of births because of a shortage of consultant cover at the unit.

Valerie Mackenzie was due to travel more than 100 miles south to Raigmore Hospital in Inverness but she went into labour early on Monday morning, more than a fortnight ahead of her expected date.
