THE STRENGTH of the five applicants for SFL membership surely underlined the need for a proper pyramid structure in the Scottish game. It also laid bare the lack of genuine ambition within the junior set-up.

While Annan Athletic were admitted, any one of the other four sides -- Spartans, Edinburgh City, Preston Athletic and Cove Rangers -- would have been welcome additions to the Scottish Football League.
