ENTRY to the FTSE100 index always creates demand for a stock from index fund and greater interest from the investors and analysts who prefer blue-chip shares. Slough Estates should thus benefit when it enters the Footsie tomorrow, thanks to Boots and Alliance Unichem creating a vacancy with their merger.

Slough has a pounds 5bn portfolio of largely industrial property, which may be less exciting than City skyscrapers but is more resilient to the volatility that affects shops and offices. The extensive overseas estate provides diversity, but it is the UK element that will provide the greatest interest in the near future.
