Summary
CORUS will be guaranteed all the power it needs for years to come with the building of a multi-million pound electricity substation in Port Talbot. But the good news for the steel giant is bad news for campaigners trying to block the Prenergy power station in the docks because the sub-station will be linked to that. Council planners have now approved the National Grid's application for the 275kv station on land near Corus in Margam.
It is considered vital enough to sacrifice an important wildlife habitat. Council planning chief Geoff White said the substation was required after Prenergy applied to the National Grid for the connection of its power station to the high-voltage electricity transmission network. Corus spokesman Tim Rutter said: "At times of high demand or when we are at full capacity, we have to take electricity from the national grid. For this reason it is important we are able to maintain external supply."See the full content of this document
